Urticaria - Urticaria Learning Centre

Urticaria, hives or nettlerash is a side effect of an allergic reaction rather than a condition. It is characterised by red, very itchy, swollen areas of the skin and occurs when histamines and other inflammatory chemicals are released into the skin. Hives appear suddenly and may leave quickly in 1-2 hours, or can last as long as 24 hours. They often appear in clusters, with new clusters appearing as other areas clear. There are no guaranteed treatments or means of controlling attacks. Most treatment plans for urticaria involve being aware of one's triggers;however, this can be difficult as there are several different forms of urticaria and people often exhibit more than one type.
