Vacuums: Successful dust management starts with this simple task: regular vacuuming. However, most vacuums blow out a large percentage of the dust that they are supposed to be removing. For those sensitive to dust, this domestic chore can lead to an increase of symptoms. This is why it is essential to replace your vacuum cleaner with one that is equipt with a HEPA air filter and has hygenic sealable bags for disposal of the collected dust. These models have been tried and tested and I believe them to be the best range available.
Miele is a German manufacturer of high quality domestic appliances, commercial equipment and fitted kitchens. It was founded in 1899 by Carl Miele (above) and Reinhard Zinkann (below) and has always been a family-owned, family-run company.

Since the beginning, the Miele motto has been "Immer Besser" or "Forever Better" and this philosophy is still reflected in the legendary quality and longevity of the products.

Miele has always been a pioneer in the field of domestic appliances. They developed the first washing machine from the technology of a butter churn. Here are just a few important developments in the company's history:

1900 - the first wooden tub washing machine
1929 - Europe's first electrically driven domestic dishwasher
1978 - world's first computer-controlled washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers with touch sensor controls
1986 - unique cutlery tray for dishwashers
1998 - integrated coffee machine for domestic use

Miele currently employs nearly 15,000 people worldwide and has an annual group turnover of DM 4.25 bn and is one of the largest domestic appliance brands in Europe.

Miele UK
Miele came to Britain in 1963. Since then the company has grown quickly, moving to its current prestigious headquarters in Abingdon, Oxfordshire in 1981. It now has a staff of 250 and an annual turnover of around £ 50m.

Miele Quality
"Forever better" has been the Miele philosophy ever since the company was founded in 1899. These two words epitomise the absolute and uncompromising commitment to quality that is still valid today.

The stringency of Miele quality tests is difficult to beat. They often demand far more than is required by the industry standards. Individual domestic appliances are picked at random from the inspection line and subjected to an endurance test. These appliances are not considered worthy to represent the Miele brand until they have successfully completed a 10,000 hour test which equates to a life span of 20 years.

These two small words encapsulate the entire philosophy of Miele, a philosophy which is applied to every area of the company's activity. They have been part of the company for a hundred years.

The founding fathers, Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann, used this slogan as far back as 1901 to embellish their first wooden tub washing machine. In doing so, they gave birth to a company philosophy which is still the benchmark against which the company measures itself.

This phrase represents both a duty and a challenge to everyone working at Miele. Every employee - whether they work in research and development, manufacturing or sales - has a contribution to make towards achieving this objective. The emphasis lies on inventing and refining new machines and equipment and on improving the consumer benefits they have to offer.

Miele machines are durable and longlasting. The founding fathers considered it unethical to sell machines which would give up after only a few years. In their own words, "Success is only possible in the long term if one is totally and utterly convinced of the quality of one's products."

Protection of the environment is another important part of the company credo. By producing robust appliances that will last for years, Miele has been conserving natural resources ever since the company was founded. Miele's insistence that their machines should make economical use of electricity, water and detergent is a further factor in the concept of quality. Concern for the environment is truly embedded in the company philosophy.

Thanks to this company philosophy which focuses on the dynamic development of quality and technology, the Miele brand is now identified with unsurpassed product quality. The philosophy has helped Miele rise to its position as one of Europe's leading manufacturers of domestic appliances with a reputation for quality which is still unrivalled.

Untitled Document * Most Miele vacuum cleaner motors have an output of 2000W, making them amongst the most powerful of their kind. They will remove the most ingrained dirt and the most stubborn fluff.

* The undercarriage has three or four high quality, smooth running castors, making the cleaner extremely stable and very easy to manoeuvre around obstacles and over thresholds. The cleaners can also sit upright, making them very convenient for use on the stairs.

* The vacuum cleaners come with a number of accessories for cleaning upholstery, shelves, skirting boards or even the car. They are neatly stored within the body. Just press the button and they are ready to hand.

* The operating radius on Miele cleaners varies from 10 metres to a unique 13 metres, so you can vacuum a very long way without changing sockets.

* Vacuuming with a cleaner that is the wrong height and forces you to bend over, can really make your back ache. Most models in the Miele range have a telescopic suction tube which can be adjusted to the most comfortable working height for you to avoid strain on the back. It locks into position and a ratchet system prevents it extending or retracting during use.

* Each section of the suction tube, the hand piece and the floorhead is firmly connected by Miele's unique locking system and cannot, therefore, separate unexpectedly. Each piece can be easily released by depressing the catch.

* The hand piece has a fully rotating hose connection and an air brake which is conveniently placed for trouble-free adjustment. With the hand piece and the suction tube fully extended, a working height of 120cm is possible.

* A thermostat prevents Miele cleaners from overheating which can happen, for example, if something gets stuck and blocks the air flow. The cleaner will switch itself off automatically and an indicator light will come on to alert you to the problem.

* Miele cleaners can be fitted a choice of three different filters to suit the filtration level you require.

* To store the tube in an upright position if you want a break during cleaning, slot the floorhead into the clip at the rear of the cleaner. Certain models will switch off when the floorhead is slotted into the clip and start again when the floorhead is removed.

* A special bracket on the side of the cleaner will hold the suction tube and floorhead firmly in place for tidy storage and ease of carrying.

* A metal ring on the hose connector enables 360° rotation of the suction hose.

* Should you wish to remove the hose for storage, a special shutter can be closed across the hose coupling opening to prevent smells or dust escaping from the dustbag.

* A buffer strip runs right the way round the cleaner body to prevent any damage either to the cleaner or to furniture.

* Thanks to the motor suspension and lining of the motor housing, Miele cleaners are very quiet in operation.

* With the auto reverse function selected, the rewind brake on the cable drum is released. It pays out the exact amount of cable required and gathers in excess cable when travelling backwards, preventing you from running over loose cable or tripping. The option can be switched off if preferred.

* The blower facility enables easy cleaning of awkward corners. Hidden dust can be blown out of nooks and crannies and vacuumed up afterwards. An additional blower connection can be purchased as an optional extra for certain models to increase the strength of the blowing action.

* Miele's vacuum cleaners contribute to a clean environment in every way. The ABS casing is clearly marked to facilitate eventual recycling.

If you or your children suffer from allergies or asthma, then the type of vacuum cleaner you own can make a vast difference in your quality of life. A good vacuum cleaner helps control dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens by sucking them up and trapping them for disposal, making your indoor air cleaner and more breathable. Choosing a good vacuum can be a daunting prospect, so Allergymatters have put together a quick ratings guide to make your choice simpler.

It is important to take the following into consideration:

Power
The motor power, measured in watts determines the horsepower of the vacuum. The higher the wattage, the more powerful the machine.

Weight and Comfort
Before purchasing a HEPA vacuum cleaner, look at the product specification of it and find out its weight. The last thing you want is a vacuum cleaner that is too heavy (especially if you have lots of stairs to contend with) and means you are unable to use it.

Tools and Accessories
To enable a thoroughly clean home you need a small army of cleaning attachments to assist your HEPA vacuum cleaner. Most vacuums come with standard attachments, which are extremely helpful when cleaning. If however you require other tools for more specialised cleaning jobs, the manufacturer's will usually supply additional attachments at an extra cost. It is therefore worth considering what cleaning jobs you intend to do and what tools you will need to carry out those jobs.

Our ‘Tools’ symbol explained:

Basic range

Good range

Comprehensive range

Dust Capacity
It is important to consider the capacity of the dust collecting chamber or bag on your vacuum. The larger the capacity the less often you will need to empty or replace it.

Power Settings
Many vacuums come with different power settings to control the strength of the vacuum suction when cleaning. This is very useful, particularly if you are using your vacuum for a variety of tasks. For example, you would probably use a stronger suction on deep pile carpets to ensure thorough deep cleaning between the pile, but you would not necessarily need to use the strong suction for dusting objects like skirting boards. A vacuum with this feature allows you to have more control whilst cleaning.

Filters
If you suffer with allergies, such as asthma, hayfever and eczema, it is really important that you choose a vacuum that comes with an allergy filter. We recommend that you choose a vacuum that comes with a HEPA or HEPA type filter which can capture 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns in size and can prevent the spread of bacteria making it the sensible choice all around. You may also need to consider whether the filter is washable or whether it needs replacing. If the filter is replaceable take into account the cost to replace it and how often you would need to change it.

Cable Range
There is nothing worse than the constant starting and stopping of cleaning, because your vacuum cable is not long enough to reach the other side of the room! When choosing your vacuum, make sure the cable range is long enough to clean the areas, including those hard to reach places that you need to do.

Noise
People often think that their vacuum cleaner is not working if it is not making a noise! Knowing this a manufacturer intentionally made their vacuum cleaners noisier to assure people that were doing their job. If your vacuum cleaner is quiet then do not fret – this is a good thing! It doesn't mean that the vacuum cleaner isn't performing correctly, it just means it is a great package overall! A quieter vacuum reflects a better quality of motor.

Style: Canister v Upright

Upright vacuums stand on their own and are a favourite to buy if you have thick and plentiful carpet to clean. Some come with or without handy attachments that clean those hard to reach places. They are best for removing pet hair and for those who want a larger vacuum bag. Advantages of HEPA upright vacuums area it’s strength and power on carpeted areas and their simplicity of vacuuming upright.

Canister vacuums - are smaller than the upright vacuums but still are extremely powerful. Their compact designed case rolls along the floor and follows behind you whilst you vacuum carpet, furniture or upholstery. HEPA canister vacuums can move around easily hardwood floors without making wheel marks. A helpful long hose is attached to canister vacuum cleaners so you can clean thoroughly in those hard to get areas. HEPA canister vacuums come with many handy vacuum tools that provide easy and efficient cleaning of most surfaces. An advantage of Hepa canister vacuums is their ability to reach in and around furniture making sure you don’t miss a spot
