Asthma, a common condition, which causes coughing, wheezing, tightness of the chest and breathlessness, occurs in over 1.1 million children in the UK. It is a potentially life-threatening condition, which is more serious for children since they have smaller airways than adults. The precise causes of asthma are unknown; however, children with asthma constantly have inflamed airways, making them very sensitive to a number of environmental triggers or allergens, which further cause inflammation. Known triggers include, dust mite droppings, mould, animal dander, pollen, and tobacco smoke, strong odours such as perfumes and household cleaning agents, common cold, viral or sinus infections. When the airways become irritated, they narrow and the muscles around them become tightened. An increase in the production of sticky mucus, and/or phlegm may occur. This results in breathing difficulties, tightening of the chest, and consequently wheezing and coughing.
There is currently no known cure for asthma; however, there are a range of treatments aimed at reducing the frequency, severity and length of asthma attacks your child could potentially have.To read more about Asthma, click on our Asthma Learning Centre banner below.
